The Story Behind the Song

A tribute to the American spirit, written for young readers and the grown-ups who read along with them.

Published 2026 · The Molina Foundation · ISBN 978-0-9996831-2-5

America turns 250 in 2026, and The Molina Foundation is marking the year with the story behind what has been called America’s first popular song. Wendell the owl, his friend U.S.A. the eagle, and a cast of friends trace “Yankee Doodle” from a British insult to a proud anthem of independence.

Along the way, young readers meet the people and the moments that shaped the country, and learn how a put-down can be turned into a sign of strength. The book was made possible through the generous support of the RuMBa Foundation of Long Beach and The Larry and Helen Hoag Foundation.

The Molina Foundation gives new books to schools, clinics, libraries, and nonprofits across the country. Tell us about your organization and we will be in touch about getting copies into your students’ hands.
